National Round Table
“Clean Water for healthy World”,

On 22 April, on International water Day, Bells Kosova Organized one National Roundtable focused on water in general and especially water quality in Kosova. The topic was copying from the UN slogan: “Clean Water for healthy World”, which used during this year as a motto for protecting the water in global wide. In the round table participated around 30 participants, all of them representative from different important agencies, MP, members of the Government, 5 different Tv station in Kosova etc.

Prof. dr. Selvete Krasniqi – vice president of vice/president of Institute of Public Health, in her presentation inform the participants for the very bad quality of water in Kosova, especially in rural areas which are using often contaminated water.

Naser Rugova from Kosovo Assembly in his presentation inform the participants about process of redrafting the Water Law in Kosova Assembly and declared the agreement between BELLS Kosova and Committee for participating as equal member of Working for drafting the Law of Water  one member from Bells, which will be Prof. Dr Ruzhdi Pllana, member of National Coalition Board.

Prof. Dr. Ruzhdi Pllana in his presentation asked from representatives of Kosovo Government what is happen with “National Water Council” which was created in 2007 and from that period the public opinion has no one information. After the presentation, Naser Rugova – from Kosova Assembly, declared honestly: we didn’t have any information for this Council, and hi promised to organize one official meeting ASAP with the Minister for Environment regarding these issues. Based on the reports from media, the meting was organized on 23 April (one day after the round table) and both agreed to make functional the Council ASAP.

The conclusion of the National Round Table:

      • Water Resource Management in Kosovo is facing challenges in the local level as well as in central,
      • The health of the population in Kosovo is not susceptible to good quality drinking water, surface water and groundwater,
      • Required a greater commitment of all institutions in the protection of water resources and in establishing monitoring systems to drinking water, surface water and groundwater.
        1. Despite the progress achieved water sector needs to adopt specific Laws and Regulations, based on EU standards,
        2. Kosovo needs a comprehensive strategy for water sector, a Water Master Plan and an Action Plan for wastewater management,
        3. To make functional ASAP the National Water Council and supported the work of this important institution for the water sector.
        4. To oriented the investments in building water treatment plants for sewage.
        5. To improve the level of cooperation between government institutions, NGOs and experts in the water sector.
        6. To work more public awareness and awareness for protection and water saving.
        7. To build an integrated information system for drinking waters, surface waters and groundwater, and be transparent to the public.

      The recommendations and conclusions were sending to all representatives, which were participated in the round tables.
